Embracing Structure

 

N. Lee Ball and I have partnered together to present "Embracing Structure", the June exhibit at Local Color Gallery.  Our show will explore two different artists’ representations of man-made versus organic structures.  From Lee’s more realistic view focusing on details to my more abstract view of breaking down structure into geometric shapes, it will have something for everyone.  Please see below for a sneak peak of what you will see.

"Rockin Cleveland"

This is a cityscape of my hometown focusing on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.  You can also expect to see paintings of east coast cities including New York and Philadelphia.

"Raleigh Groove"

This is my first Raleigh cityscape and a second will be presented at the show.   Hopefully, my first Durham cityscape will be completed by then too.  It is still a work in progress.

"The Lyre"

One of the three bridges named after musical instruments that are over the Hoofdvaart in Holland. There will also be a painting of a Boston and Blue Ridge Bridge.

From a Doodle to a Painting

 This doodle of mine goes way back to high school.    I love to doodle...always have, always will.  So whether I was in a lecture or study hall, I would draw on my lined notebook paper with whatever writing instrument was in my hand.  If I remember correctly, I usually used pencil.  Back then I would fill a entire page with one...wish I still had one to share with you.  My doodle above is something I did recently.  My husband looked at it and said to me "you should turn that into a painting".  So hear are the results....

While I was painting "Golden City" last summer, I decided to break a habit of mine by always using black paint to finish a painting.  I used three paint colors...white, gold and vandyke brown.  I was so happy with the result that I almost kept it for my own kitchen.  But while I was getting work together for a gallery in Tremont, I decided to add it to the collection.  It sold the first art walk it was on display...I guess someone else loves "Golden City" as much as I do.

Last fall, I met with Rose, the owner of The Sacred Squirrel, about displaying my work there.  While I was showing her my fish paintings, she suggested that I do the same but with squirrels.  I thought this was a great idea so I decided to painted the first two "Nut Hugger" and "Kent".  They are currently available at The Sacred Squirrel in Kent, Ohio.  I loved how the first two turned out and decided to paint "Nut Hugger II" in a neutral color palette.  It currently resides in my home because I'm not sure that I'm ready to part with it.

Fish

I was asked by a good friend of mine to paint fish about a year ago.  It was important to me that I created the painting in my own style so I decided to incorporate a grid which I had used in earlier paintings.  The idea is that the grid in the background abstractly represents water and plant life.  The grid continues into the fish and represents fish scales.

After the first commissioned piece, the commissions kept coming...2011 became the year of my fish phase.  Here are a few photos of some of the fish I have painted.  I plan to paint other animals in the same style in the future.

So I may not be the green thumb in the family...no that title belongs to my husband, Craig...lucky for me since I have found great inspiration from the flowers that he grows.  One beautiful summer day back in Tallmage, Ohio, I decided to go out on our patio and paint what was around me.  Turns out the daylillies were in full bloom...and so was our orchid.  Here are some photos of the pieces I was inspired to paint.

 Bogota, Columbia was painted for a good friend of mine.  I started by painting a sketch on canvas paper.  I rarely sketch with even a pencil or pen before I paint, which makes this painted sketch even more rare.  I love how well it turned out and I plan on having it matted and framed.  I wish that I had a better photo of the finished painting other than this photo with it on an easel in my garage.
